Sunday, June 14th was our first trip out to St. Helena light station this year. Spring has been cool and the weather/water has not allowed us to venture out until Sunday. This is almost a full month later than our first trip out last year.
All seemed to weather well. A tree or two was downed by the high winds we had this winter and spring but the covers on the boat house doors survived. We opened up the keepers house and the boat house and found little damage from the winter and/or visitors. There was some mouse evidence but the Teysen traps had done their jobs well. The geese left their calling card on the sidewalks but the young families kept their distance.
We weeded the garden. It looks like the weeds do better on St. Helena than our gardens are doing here in town. We planted the first of our garden vegetables, planning to have lettuce and maybe peas in just a few weeks, fresh salad for the Island visitors. The plan is to bring tomato plants when we return in late June.
Cindy Mom, from The Little Traverse Conservancy spent her day on the Island spraying for poison ivy in the continuing effort to bring this plant under control. Thanks, Cindy!
The moorings were placed and the beginning of supplies for our summer on the Island were brought in from Cake and Ice Cream in the ever present Zodiac.
We Zodiaced back out to Cake and Ice Cream and headed back to Mackinaw City around 3pm. A little bit of sun and wind burn, a whole lot of tired and satisfied after a wonderful day on our island.
